Pokemon Card Condition Guide

Pokemon card condition describes how close a card is to its original state. For collectors, condition affects price, trust, display quality and whether a raw card might be worth grading. Card & Ink uses plain-English condition notes so buyers and sellers can understand what they are looking at before making a decision.

Quick condition scale

Condition What it usually means Best for
Near mint Clean front and back with only tiny handling marks, if any. Collectors who want strong binder or grading candidates.
Lightly played Minor edge, corner or surface wear visible on close inspection. Collectors who want a tidy copy without paying NM prices.
Moderately played Clearer wear such as whitening, surface marks, small dents or handling marks. Binder collectors, set builders and budget copies.
Heavily played Heavy visible wear, bends, creases, scratches or more obvious damage. Low-cost collecting when condition is less important.
Damaged Major crease, water damage, peeling, writing, severe dents or structural damage. Placeholders, childhood copies or very scarce cards.

What Card & Ink checks

When we assess raw cards, we look at the front, back, corners, edges, surface, centering and any signs of dents, print lines, scratches, whitening or pressure marks. Photos matter because two cards with the same condition label can still look different in hand.

Raw vs graded condition

A raw condition note is an opinion based on the visible card. A graded card has been assessed by a grading company and sealed in a slab with a numerical grade. Card & Ink does not guarantee future grades, but we do use condition language to help collectors understand the difference between buying a raw copy, a binder copy and a slabbed card.

Selling cards to Card & Ink

If you want to sell Pokemon cards or a collection, condition helps decide whether direct purchase or consignment makes sense. Clean, popular cards in strong condition are usually easier to sell. Lower-condition cards can still be useful for set builders, especially vintage, promos and popular characters.

Card cleaning is not offered as a standalone service. For accepted raw cards that Card & Ink is selling or consigning, cleaning can be added as sale preparation at GBP 5 per card where it is suitable.

FAQ

Is near mint the same as perfect?

No. Near mint means a card is very clean overall, but it does not promise a perfect card or a specific grading result.

Can a lightly played card still look good?

Yes. Many lightly played cards present well in a binder or sleeve, especially when the wear is mostly on the back edges or corners.

Should I only buy graded cards?

Not always. Graded cards are useful when you want authentication, a protected slab or a specific grade. Raw cards are often better for binders, set building and lower-cost collecting.
